Hello,

I'm a daily reader of this DC archive forum, but mostly only passive (my first language is german) and I'm really appriciate the knowledge of you guys here.
I'm a comic geek since my early childhood way back in the early 80's, mainly DC Comics.
Today here in Germany we've got only a few series in german language (Supes, Bats, JLA and a anthology serie with Green Lantern, Flash, Batgirl, Nightwing, Harley Quinn(!) alternating).
So, I decided a few years back to change into the US-market to buy the original comics, no problem in the age of internet comic shops.

Now here comes the exciting part. I buy every month (or so) an archive edition and I own 24 volumes so far and I love 'em all.
In the meantime to my surprise our german publisher has also "discovered" the beautiful archives editions and published the following volumes in german language so far: (It might be intersting for you)

in chronical order:
JLA #1
Green Lantern #1
Batman #1
JLA #2
Superman #1
Batman #2
Superman #2
Flash #1
Batman #3
World's Finest #1
Batman #4
Batman #5 (December 2002)
JLA #3 (March 2003)

It's obviously that Batman is the best seller. Knowing that four volumes will be published in a year my bet for the June release (which still is a secret) is Dark Knight #1 or World's Finest #2.
If you are interested, I'll keep you inform.

But for the sake of diversity I would like to see other archives editions like All-Star, Legion, Hawkman etc. , especially for my non-english speaking comic fans.

I just wondering, are there any other countries with DC archive editions in their own languages? Maybe in South America in portuguese or spanish?

That's great to hear, Dirk.
The more different editions there are of the DC Archives, the stronger the program will be and the more likely it will be that we'll see more published each year.

I haven't heard of any other editions, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear of some others.

Willkommen, Herr Dirk!

I have two German editions of DC Comics from the 1970s. They are in a box right now, and I can't get to them. When I can, I'll post the details. I know one is a translation of Justice League of America #138-139, with Adam Strange as a guest star.

I'd love to get the German translations of some of these archives. What do they cost?

Being a complete archives addict, I may have to order 1 or 2 of these. I was just stumbling around Amazon's German site and found some interesting pages. Here's an image:

Of course, Amazon's all sold out, and I can't seem to locate an online retailer with clear US shipping options and credit card info. The German ebay was complete confusion to me, even with four years of German in high school (15 years ago!).

Dirk, I can tell you there are NO Archive versions in Spanish or Portuguese in Mexico or any of South America.
Don't know about Spain, though. In many ways Spain leads the way in what gets translated (not that the translations are THAT good, IMHO), while Mexico pretty much translates only the most commercial stuff (Spawn, X-Titles, Spidey, Bats, et al.) I don't buy those titles even in the original version, but I have to admit that some of those Mexican floppies are a wonder to behold, with covers in ultra-slick glossy paper and even the interior pages a hell of a lot thicker than its U. S. counterparts.
Like I said, maybe Spain has versions of previously Archived stories, but don't bet on Hardcover versions.

The coincidences on this board never cease to amaze me.

Today I was looking through my collection and found four German comics I bought new in Munich in 1975. One DC and three Marvels

The DC comics is Superman-Batman dated 29 Marz 1975 and sold for 1,40DM. The two stories in this book are "Eine Waffe ubernimmt die Macht", a Legion of Super-Heroes reprint from Superboy 198. And a Batman/Man-Bat story entitled "Konig im dschungel der Grosstadt"

The Marvels are
1) Die Spinne 29 (Spider-Man) with a Ditko Green Goblin story
2) Die Spinne 30 with a Ditko Molten Man story
3) Die Ruhmreicher Racher 15 (reprinting Avengers 16)

The Die Spinne comics have a Aquarius (Namor) backup story in each while the Racher contains a Gene Colan Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell)back-up.

These are a lot of fun to look through as some of us haven't had much opportunity to use our four years of high school German for a few years more than Bill has. Fifteen years, Hah!

Steve

Thanks for the answers.

It's 6.45 am in the morning in Germany and I have to go to work. This afternoon I can post more details about german online shops and the german ebay.

But before I go to work I need coffee...

Hi Dirk

How the quality of the German Archives compare with the US volumes? Is the paper the same quality? What about the colour? Any sign of German versions of the Marvel Masterworks?

I was in Switzerland recently and ran across some German reprints of 80s Marvel stuff. There were at least two McFarland Spider-Man hardcovers that collected stuff not yet reprinted in the US (one involved the Wendigo and Wolverine). Unfortunately, I don't read German so I didn't pick them up. But it seems to me sometimes that Europeans treat our pop cultural heritage better than we do. (This is certainly true with regards to our musical heritage. For the longest time, you could find vintage R&B and rock n roll imports a hell of a lot easier than domestic compilations.)

James Friel: Greetings to Oakland. I visited the Bay Area in the middle 90's and it was great.

NecessaryImpurity: The reprint of Justice League of America #138-139 should be Gerechtigkeitsliga 4. This serie run from 1977-1984, No.1-28 and reprints most of Justice League of America #127-224. I started with No. 20 and I loved it. Of course I bought all the back issues too.

Unknown question: Freiburg, my home town near the Black Forest, is only 60 kilometers away from the swiss border and I've got also relatives there. Small world!

KOBE27: My summer holiday is probable in Spain and I'll will sure looking for a comcic shop in Valencia.

BillNolan and NecessaryImpurity: Amazon Germany sold out and they don't order the latest archive editions anymore.(?). Sadly, because they have clear and respectable shipping info and credit card info.
www.sammlerecke.de is our biggest online comic-shop. Click on the buttom to start, then click "Comic Verlage A-D", then for archive editions No. 1-8 (JLA #1, Green Lantern #1,..., Flash #1) click "Dino", "Superhelden", "DC Archives". Now you have got different prizes of these volumes.
For archive editions No. 9-13 (Batman #3,...,JLA #3) click "DC Deutschland" and "DC Archiv Edition".
1 Euro is almost equal with 1 Dollar.

I'm not sure about the shopping costs to USA/Canada and I think he accept no credit card. It's not described exactly. I'll ask the owner per mail. Though it's german biggest online comic, the comic market is (still) very small in Germnany.

Perhaps a better solution is Ebay Germany ( www.ebay.de ). Write "archiv edition*" and hit the "los" buttom. Almost every archive edition is offer to sell. The guys "comixtom" and "animodservices" accept credit cards and the shipping costs are US 8,00 $.
If you want I can bid for you. Maybe we can catch a cheap volume.

Well, I may just be giving "animodservices" a little business in 1 day and 18 or so hours. I might try to check out the first Batman one and the GL one.

Steve Topper: The Superman-Batman title was a long running series, I believe it was from 1969-1984. I'll try to find out the original issue of that Batman/Man-Bat story.
The marvel comics were reprinted from the beginning by a german comic publisher called Williams.

HighlandRay: The quality of the german archives are reallly good and is equal to the US volumes. Just the same format, the same paper, the same colours etc. Really 1:1.
And yes, there are german versions of the Marvel Masterworks called "Marvel Klassik".

Here we go:
#1 Spider-Man Vol.1
#2 Silver Surfer Vol.1
#3 X-Men Vol.1
#4 Die Fantastischen Vier Vol.1 (Fantastic Four)
#5 Die Rächer Vol.1 (Avengers)
#6 Hulk Vol.1
#7 Silver Surfer Vol.2
#8 Die Fantastischen Vier Vol.2
#9 X-Men Vol.2
#10 Thor Vol.1
#11 Die Fantastischen Vier Vol.3
#12 Daredevil Vol.1
#13 X-Men Vol.3

Hm, also 13 volumes...funny.
You can take a look at the covers also on www.sammlerecke.de .Click the buttom, then "Comic-Verlage M-Z", "Marvel" and "Marvel Klassik".

Comicsgeek: Yes, I heard about the two McFarland Spider Man hardcovers, but I'm not the Marvel expert, so I don't know exact the backround/reason about this.

BTW, yesterday I read issue #1 of the THUNDER Agents Vol.1 and to my surprise that was really a good read. I ordered THUNDER Agents because of the recommendatons on these boards and I wasn't dissapointed.
